This is indeed an ancient art form, dating from the earliest times in China. Its revival in Austria and France in more recent times owes much to the wider availability of consistently fine quality pure silk, the creative use of fine art paint varieties unknown in former times, new application techniques allowing great precision of form and much improved methods of colour fastening to withstand modern washing practices. These innovations have been used by highly skilled artists who are prepared to devote the long hours still required to create truly imaginative works of enduring value.
The articles in this shop were designed and made by Brigitte Winkler at her studio in the bush next to rainforest outside Kuranda, near Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. Brigitte completed all ther tertiary art studies in Austria in the 80's, specialising in hand painted silk and traditional silk colouring techniques.
For ten years she had her own highly successful women's and men's fashion boutique in central Vienna, at which she sold only her own works in silk. Brigitte was first attracted to Australia by the verdant green growth of Queensland and the Barrier Reef region's glorious colours. She settled in Kuranda in 1998 and creates superb artworks in silk and stone.
As Brigitte herself explains: "In all my artwork, I seek to transfer my dreams and inspirations form the beautiful nature all around me to my silk. In this way, every article I create is an original work of art and a unique part of me." |
